Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Mr David Chin-Shong

Mr David Chin-Shong is a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon registered with the New Zealand Medical Council, the Dental Council of New Zealand, and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

David graduated in medicine in 1996 from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and in dentistry in 2002 from University College Cork. He completed his specialist training in oral and maxillofacial surgery in London and Liverpool, qualifying as a consultant surgeon in 2008. He also completed a craniofacial fellowship at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. While working in the UK, David received two Aesthetic Dentistry awards, which he credits to the importance of teamwork.

David’s particular interest is in making the surgical experience as comfortable and positive as possible — especially for anxious patients. He offers Target Controlled Infusion (TCI) intravenous sedation, which uses a computerised pump to tailor sedation doses to each patient’s individual physiology. During TCI sedation, brain wave activity (EEG), breathing, heart rate and blood pressure are continuously monitored. The medications take effect quickly and wear off rapidly after the infusion stops, allowing for a swift recovery.

For dental implant cases, David uses 3D digital planning with CBCT imaging, intraoral scanning and computer-designed surgical guides. This technology allows each implant to be positioned according to a detailed virtual plan created specifically for the patient’s anatomy.

David remains committed to ongoing professional development and regularly adopts advances in surgical technology and technique. He practises across five Wellington locations and works closely with referring dentists to ensure coordinated patient care.

Outside of work, David enjoys spending time with his children, playing golf, and having barbecues with family and friends.
