About David
Mr David Chin-Shong
I graduated in Medicine in 1996 from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and Dentistry in 2002 from University College Cork. I completed my specialist training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in London and Liverpool, becoming a consultant surgeon in 2008. I also completed a craniofacial fellowship at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, and received two Aesthetic Dentistry awards during my time in the UK. I am a registered practitioner with both the New Zealand Medical Council and the Dental Council of New Zealand, and a member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.
Services I Accept Referrals For
- Wisdom teeth removal — including complex impactions, all anaesthesia options including TCI sedation and general anaesthesia at Bowen Hospital
- Dental extractions — broken teeth, failed root canals, teeth near the inferior alveolar nerve or maxillary sinus
- Dental implants — 3D digitally planned with guided surgical stents using BlueSkyBio/Realguide technology
- Oral biopsies — soft tissue and bone biopsies, incisional and excisional
- Oral pathology — assessment and management of mucosal lesions, lumps and bumps
Sedation Expertise — You’re Welcome to Observe
I offer Target Controlled Infusion (TCI) IV sedation using propofol, with full monitoring including EEG brain wave analysis, capnography, pulse oximetry and blood pressure. This provides a highly controlled, patient-friendly sedation experience with rapid recovery. I am more than happy for you to observe this technique — please get in touch to arrange a visit.
How to Refer
Please direct referrals to Maxfacs Ltd to ensure I personally manage your patient’s care:
- Email: specialistoralsurgery@protonmail.com
- Phone: 021 247 6387
I aim to see urgent referrals within 1 week and routine referrals within 2-4 weeks. I will always send a detailed report back to you following consultation and after any procedures.
Implant Cases — Happy to Discuss
For implant referrals, I use 3D digital planning with CBCT imaging and intraoral scanning to create guided surgical stents. I’m always happy to discuss cases before formal referral — whether it’s about bone quality, site suitability, or treatment planning. Your patients benefit from precision placement, and I believe collaborative planning produces the best outcomes for restoring dentists.
